Course information

Why is Motivational Interviewing (MI) important?

  • MI evolved from Carl Rogers’ person-centred approach to counselling and therapy, as a method to help people commit to the difficult process of change
  • MI was first introduced into the mental health field in 1983 by Steve Rollnick and William Miller and has been developed over 30 years and 1200 randomised controlled trials
  • The style and spirit of motivational interviewing encompasses:
    • working collaboratively with clients, towards an individualised approach
    • being non-judgemental
    • being respectful
    • respecting a client’s autonomy
  • MI is about helping people talk themselves into changing
