Course information

Training delivered in a virtual classroom on Zoom.

This course is aimed at professionals working with children and/or their parents who contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and evaluating the needs of a child and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding/child protection concerns.

The training will equip practitioners to understand the context and their responsibilities when working with hostile, resistant families and those who use disguised compliance. It aims to increase practitioner’s confidence working with challenging, uncooperative or reluctant parents and explores how to identify and respond to disguised compliance to ensure the best outcome for the child.

Target group

All staff working in settings who may be in contact with children, young people and/or parents/carers who may become aware of possible abuse or neglect.

Pre-requisite learning

We recommend delegates have completed some child protection training before attending this course.

Aims and objectives

  • Explore strategies for maintaining a child centred ‘authoritative’ approach with resistant families
  • Be better equipped to recognise ‘disguised compliance’ in families, particularly where child neglect is a concern
  • Recognise the characteristics and behaviours of families and professionals who are engaged in a ‘resistant’ relationship
  • Reflect on professional and personal fears, experiences of resistance (passive/aggressive/disguised) with a view to developing appropriate/alternative strategies
  • Identify the importance of reflective, critical, analytical practice and the importance of regular supervision
  • Review techniques and approaches to help practitioner to develop resilience techniques when working with complex families
