Course information

Training delivered in a virtual classroom on Zoom.

Aims to provide delegates with an advanced knowledge of safeguarding and the skills required to work together within local processes for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in complex and challenging situations.

The training will equip practitioners to understand the context and their responsibilities when safeguarding children.

Target group

This is for all staff working with children, young people and/or their parents/carers who could potentially contribute to assessing planning intervening and evaluating the needs of a child or young person and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding/child protection concerns.

Pre-course reading and materials

Aim and objectives

  1. To be able to describe the relevant legislation, guidance, procedures and processes (e.g. Children Act 1989, Children Act 2004, Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018, Keeping Children Safe in Education 2020/21. Multi-Agency CP standards, procedure for resolving professional disagreements (Escalation Policy) and professionals roles and responsibilities when safeguarding children in Swindon.
  2. To be able to demonstrate knowledge of the local procedures and systems for safeguarding children including awareness of the South West Child Protection Procedures and how to access them.
  3. To be able to demonstrate knowledge and use of the thresholds document when making decisions, assessing risk and when making referrals.   
  4. To be able to explain what makes a good referral.
  5. To be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues on information sharing, consent and capacity. 
  6. To be able to explore professional curiosity and the skills for critical thinking and assessment of risk ensuring the voice of the child is recorded.
  7. To have explored S47 Investigations, Child Protection Conference, Core Groups and Care Proceedings and how they are configured locally.
  8. To be able to explain the guiding principles on safer recruitment and how to respond to allegations against staff, including the role of the LADO.
  9. To be able to identify emerging safeguarding themes and learning from rapid reviews and child safeguarding practice reviews.
