This course aims to support managers understand their roles and responsibilities when supervising staff in relation to safeguarding children and adults at risk.

Target group

This is specialist training for managers and supervisors overseeing child protection cases and named designated professionals.  Although the focus of the training is on children, the principles of this training are also applicable to those who working with vulnerable adults/adults at risk.   

Effective supervision is important in enabling good, authoritative practice; enabling practitioners to reflect on their work; supporting relationship based partnership working; and facilitating effective decision-making and planning.” - Triennial Analysis of SCRs, 2020

This interactive and dynamic one day course that will focus on the link between effective supervision and improved outcomes for vulnerable children and adults. The course seeks to identify the core qualities of effective supervisors helping staff to make critical judgments.

Aims and objectives

  • Describe the elements of effective safeguarding supervision and how it can contribute to good outcomes for vulnerable populations,
  • Be familiar with key findings from Serious Case Reviews and Domestic Homicide Reviews,
  • Have an opportunity to practice skilled questioning to enable supervisees to critically appraise their professional judgement.
