Course information

Training delivered in a virtual classroom on Zoom.

This half-day virtual workshop provides the essentials of good practice with people who self-neglect or hoard.

Drawing on learning from research and from safeguarding adult reviews, it assists those in frontline roles to understand the needs of people who self-neglect, to recognise the risks involved, to respond appropriately at their point of first contact and to identify forward pathways for referral to other agencies.

Target group

Suitable for staff in a wide variety of frontline practice roles across a range of agencies within the safeguarding partnership. In particular it is valuable for those who come into contact with people at risk and need to signpost or refer them on to appropriate services. These may include personnel from emergency services, voluntary agencies providing advice and support and those in allied healthcare roles.

Aims and objectives

  • To provide an introduction to the signs, symptoms and causes of self-neglect
  • To identify the relevance of mental capacity to decision-making about self-care
  • To consider responses to reluctance to engage
  • To outline the legal powers and duties available to a range of agencies
  • To identify how organisations can support their staff
  • To review the markers of good multiagency collaboration

Course materials

Please note: There are both core and specialist modules on safeguarding and self-neglect/hoarding. You should only attend one of these modules and do not need to complete the core module before completing the specialist module. The course content is very similar for each module, but is more in-depth on the specialist module.

If you are unsure which module to attend, please review the course information as this provides some guidance depending on your role.
